Charlie Daniels Band -“(What This World Needs Is) A Few More Rednecks”
Charlie Daniels never hesitated to say exactly what was on his mind, and “(What This World Needs Is) A Few More Rednecks” is a perfect example. Released in 1990, the song appeared on the Charlie Daniels Band’s 1989 album Simple Man. Daniels co-wrote it with longtime band members Taz DiGregorio, Charles Hayward and Jack Gavin.
Produced by James Stroud, Simple Man found Daniels mixing Southern rock, country and plainspoken social commentary. Its title track became a Top 20 country hit, while “A Few More Rednecks” reached No. 56 on Billboard’s country chart. Although it was not one of Daniels’ biggest radio singles, it developed into a lasting fan favorite.
In the song, Daniels uses the word “redneck” as a compliment instead of an insult. His definition has little to do with geography or social status. He is singing about hardworking, patriotic people who are willing to stand up for their beliefs, accept responsibility and help their neighbors. The characters he celebrates may enjoy country cooking and admire John Wayne, but Daniels’ larger message is about honesty, courage, common sense and personal independence.
The lyrics also take aim at dishonest politicians, excessive government spending and people who expect something for nothing. Daniels even mentions Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, placing the original recording squarely in the final years of the Cold War. Musically, the song supports its defiant message with a tough combination of country, blues and Southern rock.
Daniels returned to the song two decades later for his 2010 patriotic collection Land That I Love. He recorded an updated version because the political references in the original had become dated—particularly the line about Gorbachev. The revised recording allowed Daniels to preserve the song’s central message while bringing some of its details into a new era.
