Every country superstar has that one song that opens the door to stardom, and for Clay Walker, it was the infectious debut single “What’s It to You.” Released in 1993, the song introduced fans to a young Texas singer with a smooth baritone, undeniable charm, and a knack for delivering modern country hits. By the end of the year, Walker had gone from an unknown artist to one of Nashville’s hottest new acts.

Written by Robert Ellis Orrall and Curtis Wright, “What’s It to You” is a playful love song about a man who can’t understand why everyone seems so interested in his relationship. With its catchy chorus and upbeat tempo, the song fit perfectly into the wave of contemporary country music that dominated the early 1990s alongside artists like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and Clint Black.

Walker, a native of Beaumont, Texas, had been performing in clubs throughout the Lone Star State before landing a recording contract with Giant Records. Producer James Stroud, known for his work with Clint Black and other country stars, recognized Walker’s potential and helped craft a polished yet traditional sound for his self-titled debut album.

Released as Walker’s first single, “What’s It to You” quickly climbed the charts. In August 1993, it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart, making Walker one of the few artists in country music history to score a chart-topping hit with his debut single. The success immediately established him as one of country’s brightest newcomers.

Walker has often credited the song with changing his life almost overnight. Before its release, he was playing relatively small venues across Texas. Within months of reaching No. 1, he was touring nationally and performing for thousands of fans each night. The song’s popularity also helped his self-titled debut album become a commercial success, producing several additional hit singles, including “Live Until I Die” and “Dreaming with My Eyes Open.”

Producer James Stroud’s clean production allowed Walker’s warm vocals to remain front and center while blending traditional country instrumentation with the polished sound that defined early-’90s country radio. The result was a recording that appealed to longtime country fans while attracting a new generation of listeners.

More than 30 years later, “What’s It to You” remains one of Clay Walker’s signature songs. It continues to be a favorite on classic country radio and is a highlight of his live concerts. For fans, the song represents the beginning of an impressive career that has produced dozens of hit singles and earned Walker a place among the defining voices of 1990s country music.

Sometimes all it takes is one great song to launch a career. For Clay Walker, “What’s It to You” wasn’t just his first hit—it was the song that introduced country music to an artist who would become one of the decade’s most successful performers.
