Few songs in popular music history have enjoyed the remarkable success of LeAnn Rimes’ ‘How Do I Live.’ Released in 1997, the emotional ballad became one of the biggest crossover hits of the decade and helped transform the young country singer into an international star.

The song was written by acclaimed songwriter Diane Warren, who was asked to create a love song for the action film Con Air, starring Nicolas Cage. Warren wrote ‘How Do I Live’ as a heartfelt expression of devotion, imagining the overwhelming sense of loss someone would feel if a loved one were no longer in their life. The result was a powerful ballad built around a simple but universal question: “How do I live without you?”

Originally, LeAnn Rimes was selected to record the song for the movie soundtrack. At just 14 years old, Rimes had already become a country music sensation thanks to her breakthrough hit ‘Blue.’ Her mature voice and emotional delivery impressed producers, and she recorded the song with the expectation that it would appear in the film.

However, in a surprising twist, the filmmakers ultimately decided to use a version by singer Trisha Yearwood in Con Air. Executives felt Yearwood’s voice sounded more mature for the movie’s dramatic storyline. As a result, both versions were released to radio within weeks of each other, creating one of the most unusual chart battles in music history.

While Yearwood’s recording won a Grammy Award and received an Academy Award nomination, Rimes’ version became the bigger commercial success. It crossed over from country radio to mainstream pop audiences and spent a record-breaking 69 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. The song eventually became one of the best-selling singles of the 1990s and remains one of the longest-charting songs in Billboard history.

For LeAnn Rimes, ‘How Do I Live’ was more than a hit—it was a career-defining moment. The song showcased her extraordinary vocal talent and introduced her to listeners far beyond the country music world. Nearly three decades later, its timeless message of love, longing, and devotion continues to resonate with audiences, ensuring its place as one of the most iconic ballads ever recorded.
