Released in 1998 on the blockbuster album Come On Over, ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ became one of Shania Twain’s most recognizable songs and helped cement her crossover appeal between country and pop music. The witty, playful track stood out for its catchy groove, memorable hook, and humorous take on shallow displays of intelligence and masculinity.

The song was written by Shania Twain and her then-husband and producer Robert John during the sessions for Come On Over. According to Twain, the inspiration came from a conversation about men who bragged about things that were supposed to make them irresistible. One famous story connected to the song involves actor Brad Pitt. Around the time the song was being written, news broke that nude photos of Pitt had leaked online. Twain reportedly joked that even if someone looked like Brad Pitt, ‘that don’t impress me much.’ That line eventually made its way into the song and became one of its signature moments.

Lyrically, the song pokes fun at different stereotypes of men — the intellectual, the handsome movie star, and the macho cowboy — while making the point that confidence and status alone are not enough to win someone over. Twain delivers the message with humor rather than bitterness, which helped make the song relatable and fun. The chorus became instantly memorable thanks to its spoken-style phrasing and singalong quality.

Musically, the track blended country instrumentation with slick pop production, a formula that became a trademark of Twain’s late-1990s success. The song’s driving beat and polished sound allowed it to dominate multiple radio formats around the world. It became a major international hit, reaching the Top 10 in several countries and helping Come On Over become one of the best-selling albums of all time.

The music video also played a huge role in the song’s popularity. Directed by Paul Boyd, the video featured Twain in her now-iconic leopard-print outfit walking through a desert landscape while different men attempted to impress her. The visual became one of the defining pop culture images of the late 1990s and remains closely associated with Twain’s career.

More than two decades later, ‘That Don’t Impress Me Much’ is still celebrated for its humor, confidence, and catchy attitude. The song helped redefine modern country-pop and showed that Shania Twain could combine sharp songwriting with mainstream appeal in a way few artists had done before.
