HOUSTON — While most of the snow has been gone since Wednesday, certain areas of Houston may not be full defrosted. Black ice is still a danger on Houston roadways, making travel potentially hazardous.

Black ice is an almost-invisible road hazard that can lead to your vehicle entering a slide almost instantly after hitting a patch of it. Black ice can sometimes appear as a wet road surface, which in reality is a patch of slippery ice. While the roads should mostly be clear by now, bridges and overpasses may remain areas of concern.

Drivers should slow down entering ramps or bridges, and avoid slamming on their break when encountering a situation where their vehicle loses traction. Slamming on break when losing traction can cause the vehicle to spin out of control. If you encounter black ice, avoid sudden movements, slow your speed and take your foot off the brake while steering your vehicle toward better traction.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez posted these areas of concern, according to KHOU11:

  • Highway 228 and S. Sam Houston Pkwy
  • S Sam Houston Pkwy and Kirby
  • S Sam Houston Pkwy and Almeda
  • E Sam Houston Pkwy
  • Highway 90 and Uvalde

These areas have seen some crashes earlier in the day.

According to Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office, these roads are closed due to ice:

  • Grand Parkway at Westpark (northbound),
  • Grand Parkway at Peek Road (northbound and southbound)
  • Grand Parkway at Highway 90
  • Fort Bend Parkway at FM2234 (northbound)
